Sailors Home

106-108 George Street, the rocks

Over a two month period a vacant space in the heart of the city will be transformed into an other-worldly home for art, culture, creativity, environment and community to unite as an exemplar of revitalising space in the CBD so visitors can ‘’reconnect’ with the beauty of this magical city we call home in a unique and safe space.

GOOD SPACE has secured an absolutely amazing venue on Sydney Harbour in The Rocks. The Sailors Home has a large capacity with multiple levels to display art, run events and show awesome wares, two bars, and restaurant spaces with an outdoor courtyard overlooking the Harbour!

If one sat where the Sailors Home ists now, it would have provided a perfect view of the first fleet landing in 1788. Tallawoladah, also known as The Rocks, overlooks the harbour that hosted the first contact between European settlers and the Gadigal people.

Located on a compelling historical landscape, The Sailors Rest is a heritage-listed building, inextricably linked to the maritime history of The Rocks area. The building served as the Sydney Sailors’ Home beginning 01 February 1865; operating for the next 114 years. It provided inexpensive board and lodging for transiting sailors of all nationalities. After closure as a Home in 1979, it continues to serve the interest of seafarers, having reinvented itself as The Australian Mariners’ Welfare Society. Between 1980-1983, renovations were developed to substantially restructure the Home; to accommodate the Marionette Theatre of Australia, later known as The Rocks Theatre.

GOOD SPACE acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters upon which the Sailors Home, and pay their respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We are proud to support the continuation of the cultural, spiritual, and educational practices of Indigenous peoples, the oldest unbroken tradition of art in human history.
